Het Zuidelijk Toneel & Sarah Moeremans

In Vondel’s Angels, Sarah Moeremans and Joachim Robberecht descend into the slipperiest depths of hell. The entire cast simply abseils down, with helmets and headlamps. 

They fish the rebel angels from Vondel’s world-famous play Lucifer out of boiling seas of lava. Remember how the angels got there? They rebelled against God’s insane decision to set imperfect humans above them (organise your own feedback, you might say, but no). 

And look what has happened: 400 years after Vondel, it seems humans have failed completely in their duty to care for the world and their fellow human beings. With tongues of flame, new fire and ruthless questions, the angels re-engage in the fight against God, moral failure, and failed humanity. Travel with them towards the gates of heaven as an understudy on the fallen angels’ comeback tour. May Angels’ Intelligence save us.

Director

Since December 2023, Sarah Moeremans has been at the creative helm of The Southern Theater as artistic director. But earlier, she already made waves as a resident director with Crashtest Ibsen, Shut Up and Play With Me, the theater experience What Ever Happened to Mr. Pete?, and the absolute Oerol hit Reigen re-Erected. Her work is bursting with playful spirit. With cheeky humor, provocative language, and brain gum as her weapon, she sends the ensemble into the audience to challenge them. 

What’s exciting about Sarah's work is that together with writer and dramaturg Joachim Robbrecht, she lovingly shatters the classical repertoire against the current times and adds the necessary satire and societal critique. This makes her work tempting and accessible to a wide audience.
