Het Zuidelijk Toneel & Sarah Moeremans

Suffering from morning moodiness? Sometimes hate everyone? Tormented by unrequited love? Jealous of a hermit hiding in the vast forests of Alaska? Sound familiar? Then you're ready for this Mission Molière, a radical adaptation of the French comedy The Misanthrope. Oh la la!

350 years after the death of French comedy writer Molière, Sarah Moeremans and Joachim Robbrecht bring the characters from his most famous play, The Misanthrope, back to life. Or perhaps they never really died. Because irony, comedy, and cynicism are timeless. In this modernized version, set in 17th-century Paris, Sarah and Joachim offer their own take on humor, hypocrisy, and well-meaning intentions.

With a Hall of Mirrors as its backdrop and French-inspired costumes, Mission Molière is a cheerful linguistic comedy that showcases different forms of humor. The catchy chansons are guaranteed to stick in your head (“Let me sing!”). Each character has their own personality and is given a contemporary twist in Mission Molière.

💩 Alceste, a rebellious party pooper, is played by Louis van der Waal.
❤️‍ Arsinoé, a vicious woman unlucky in love, is played by Keja Klaasje Kwestro.
🦪 Célimène, a vegetarian oyster lover with enviable social skills, is played by Julia Ghysels.
👬 Philinte, Alceste's friend (a real one) & Clitandre, also nice, sort of Acaste's doppelganger. Played by Joep van der Geest.
🍒 Acaste, Célimène's light and fruity admirer, is played by Gillis Biesheuvel.
🎤 Oronte, masochistic singer-songwriter, is played by Alicia Boedhoe.

“Sarah and Joachim dig deep into the repertoire and confront the writer with the spirit of our times. The result: a biting mirror that hits us, soothes us, and makes us laugh heartily.”

DIRECTOR

Sarah Moeremans has been the artistic director of Het Zuidelijk Toneel since December 2023, but her connection with the company dates back to 2021, when she joined as a permanent director and co-artistic director. Her work is philosophical with a touch of satire, using language as its main building block. Since 2013, she has worked regularly with writer Joachim Robbrecht. At Het Zuidelijk Toneel, she has created, among other things, the audience favorite Shut Up and Play With Me (nominated for the VSCD Mime/Performance Prize), the theater experience What Ever Happened to Mr. Pete? and the absolute Oerol hit Rijgen.
