Jetse Batelaan (Leiden, 1978) graduated in 2003 from the directing program at the Academy of Theater and Dance in Amsterdam. While still a student, he created striking, almost wordless performances with rather long titles. After graduating, he started working at the Gasthuis Werkplaats & Theater in Amsterdam. Meanwhile, he created his first youth theater performance with Theatergroep MAX. From 2009 to 2012, Jetse was permanently affiliated with the Ro Theater as a director.
At Theater Artemis, Jetse works in the most radical way possible to create a company that pushes boundaries and opens up new spaces. His mission is to deliver high-quality artistic work for the whole family in the main halls. Time and again, he entices young and old alike to lose themselves in dreamy and totally absurd performances, seeking the tension between alienating abstraction and entertainment. That is what makes him and his work so exciting. Among other honors, he was awarded the Zilveren Leeuw at the Venice Biennale (2019), received the ITI Award in Düsseldorf (2020), and the Gouden Krekel for Best Youth Theater Production for (…..) Een voorstelling die schijt heeft aan zijn eigen vage titel (2021).
