What do you do with almost nothing when you are used to having so much? In this new family show directed by Jetse Batelaan, you see villagers who always had more than enough suddenly lose everything. It's as if something or someone wants to teach them a lesson. But who? And why them?
Why else would there suddenly be worms in the plum harvest? And since when does it hail with hailstones as big as pigeon eggs in May? Isn't it strange that the best workhorse is suddenly lame? And why does the bridge suddenly collapse? Does anyone else smell that burning smell? Hello?!....Hello?!!
De is a large-scale epic in which the line between ‘everything’ and ‘nothing’ turns out to be surprisingly small. Following Eind van het begin van het einde (2020) and Een leuk avondje uit (2022), this is the third production created jointly by Theater Artemis, Het Zuidelijk Toneel and hetpaleis. This time, it is a performance about very little. So little that they almost ran out of words for a title. Fortunately, there was one left. De. Hopefully, that will suffice.
Jetse Batelaan is a director and, since 2013, artistic director of Theater Artemis. He has an eye for people who struggle, and with that eye he creates visual, imaginative, and clear theater that surprises and moves. His approach is radical. In recent years, he has won several nominations and awards, including for the co-productions Het verhaal van het verhaal (The Story of the Story) and Een leuk avondje uit (A Fun Night Out).
