The bittersweet taste of ruin
Zeven performers zitten en staan gegroepeerd tegen een okergele achtergrond. Ze dragen witte slabbetjes, doorzichtige plastic handschoenen en hebben expressieve, rommelig aangebrachte grime in felle kleuren op hun gezicht. Hun handen en slabbetjes zijn besmeurd met oranje substantie, wat een absurdistische en ongemakkelijke sfeer oproept. Het is een campagnebeeld voor de voorstelling Byzantium van Het Zuidelijk Toneel.

Restaurant Byzantium is forced to close. After a hundred years of excellent service, all that remains is a disrupted staff: in the back kitchen, a dishwasher is chronically late; the oven is tended by a chef who pushes boundaries; and on the front of house, a brutish, drunken waiter would rather drink the wine himself than serve it. Everyone is chasing their own dream whilst the restaurant slowly goes under. A cunning entrepreneur is eager to transform it into a crematorium. Furnaces are furnaces.

In this first co-production between Het Zuidelijk Toneel and the Flemish Abattoir Fermé, director Stef Lernous presents a playful and slightly unsettling spectacle about the dark side of the hospitality industry. Think of ambition running wild, egos getting burnt, and nothing remaining completely fresh. The spectacle unfolds in two parts. Separated by a hundred years in the past or the future; who can say? What emerges is a culinary fever dream between heaven and waste bin, complete with visual excess, dark humour and a touch of grime.

Director

Internationally renowned director Stef Lernous founded Abattoir Fermé in 1999: the Mechelen-based theater company with a fascination for ‘the world behind the world’ and a fearless, unique, and instantly recognizable style. Stef Lernous alternates between wordless carnivalesque creations and text-based and musical theater. His expressiveness lies in the baroque visual power of his work, for which he himself designs exuberant costumes, makeup, and masks. No wonder he is considered the founding father of ‘lowland horror theater’.
