Het Zuidelijk Toneel & Sarah Moeremans

What Ever Happened to Mr. Pete? is not your usual play. The audience sits in two groups next to each other, but cannot see each other. The stands and the stage are divided in two by a wall, and the audience is given headphones. Who sees what? Do we see the same thing? What is reality? And why do we want to understand it so badly?

This alienating theater experience is a search for the truth behind Mr. Pete. Who is he? And who are we, really? A necessary question in times of algorithms, digitization, and the celebration of our happiness as free individuals. A performance about loneliness, community, and loss of control. Losing grip and feeling alone in it. A shared quest, because Mr. Pete also gets to know himself in short, funny scenes, populated by a colorful parade of characters.

Inspired by the work of Harold Pinter, Samuel Beckett, Luis Buñuel and David Lynch, director Sarah Moeremans and writer Joachim Robbrecht have created a performance about Mister Pete. Lighthearted, crisp, and with sufficient philosophical substance. Generously seasoned with playful joy and inventiveness. Sarah Moeremans and Joachim Robbrecht prove once again that lightheartedness can also be very serious. Or, as Joachim describes the performance: “There's no rhyme or reason to it, or anything to hang on to.”

DIRECTOR

Sarah Moeremans has been the artistic director of Het Zuidelijk Toneel since December 2023, but her connection with the company dates back to 2021, when she joined as a permanent director and co-artistic director. Her work is philosophical with a touch of satire, using language as its main building block. Since 2013, she has worked regularly with writer Joachim Robbrecht. At Het Zuidelijk Toneel, she has created, among other things, the audience favorite Shut Up and Play With Me (nominated for the VSCD Mime/Performance Prize) and the absolute Oerol hit Rijgen.
