Where honor, vulnerability, and national interests clash with everyday life

Het Zuidelijk Toneel & Sarah Moeremans

Kroon presents an evening at the crossroads of the past and the future. While a veteran attempts to say goodbye to his daughter who is going on a mission, his past slowly catches up with him. Gillis Biesheuvel and writer Dana Linssen delved into the world of defense. Inspired by Marco Kroon's extraordinary journey, they interviewed him and many others to gain insight into the complex and closed world of defense, where conviction, honor, and national interests clash with everyday life.

He is searching, searching for the ultimate record he wants to play for his daughter when she leaves, searching for the right words to make the insights from his military career valuable to her. As he searches and talks, he slowly becomes aware of the fact that his reality no longer matches the world around him. Tomorrow, his daughter will leave, full of ambition and energy, ready to shape the future.

When you enlist, you may never again be the civilian you once were. There is no such thing as simply returning. You cannot let go of your experience and your history.

When you start out, you have a conviction, but then you discover that there is also a front at home, public opinion, and an official side to the apparatus that sometimes seems strange to the executive side. No one can be completely satisfied, and before you have had a chance to respond, you are already on your way again to do what you always wanted to do, and too much reflection makes you weak in the fight.

DIRECTOR

Sarah Moeremans has been the artistic director of Het Zuidelijk Toneel since December 2023, but her connection with the company dates back to 2021, when she joined as a permanent director and co-artistic director. Her work is philosophical with a touch of satire, using language as its main building block. Since 2013, she has worked regularly with writer Joachim Robbrecht. At Het Zuidelijk Toneel, she has created, among other things, the audience favorite Shut Up and Play With Me (nominated for the VSCD Mime/Performance Prize), the theater experience What Ever Happened to Mr. Pete? and the absolute Oerol hit Rijgen.
